Exploring Tourism Patterns
Across Europe Interactive platform to explore where, when, and how much Europeans travel
The story

Every year, Europeans take hundreds of millions of trips inside their own continent.

The patterns look chaotic at first glance. The data tells a much tighter story. A handful of neighbors. A handful of countries. A handful of months.

We tracked it across three decades. Then we zoomed into Switzerland to test what actually predicts who shows up. Four questions, four chapters - each one a stop on the way.

Part 2 · Deep dive
A country-scale zoom: Switzerland.
Five chapters about one small country. Americans displaced Germans as the top foreign source in five major cantons. Geneva overshot the pandemic; small alpine cantons never came back.

Part 3 · Synthesis
What surprised us.
Three things the data showed that we did not know going in, areas for further exploration, and the sources and team behind it.

Problem statement

Tourism is one of the most important economic and cultural activities in Europe, but travel patterns across countries are often difficult to understand through raw statistics alone. Large datasets contain useful information about where people travel, when they travel, and how much they spend, yet these insights are usually hidden in tables and spreadsheets. Our project aims to present fragmented tourism data in a clear, intuitive, and engaging interactive way that allows users to explore tourism patterns across Europe visually.

Objectives

The main objective of EUFlow is to create a web-based data visualization platform that enables users to better understand tourism across Europe through interactive exploration. More specifically, users should be able to discover:

  • Where Europeans travel through destination popularity maps and rankings
  • When they travel through seasonal and monthly travel patterns
  • How much they spend through expenditure comparisons across destinations
  • Why Switzerland receives visitors through geographic proximity and economic factors such as GDP

Target audience

EUFlow is designed for a broad audience interested in travel trends and regional mobility. It can be useful for travelers looking for inspiration, popular destinations, or the best seasons to visit. It also supports students who want to explore real-world data through interactive visualizations. In addition, policymakers and tourism organizations can use the platform to better understand visitor behavior and regional tourism demand.

Why this topic

Our motivation comes from our experience as international students currently living in Switzerland. Since we come from different countries and share a strong interest in travel, we became curious about how Switzerland fits into broader tourism patterns across Europe. We wanted to understand not only why certain destinations are popular, but also how factors such as geography, seasonality, and economic conditions influence travel decisions. This personal connection made the topic especially meaningful and interesting for our team to explore.
