The Lines: Connecting Points and People

Each line in Lausanne's transportation system has its own performance. Here, we present an opportunity to discover the top-performing lines through a championship-style ranking.

Interactive Line Ranking

The ranking table provides an overview of the top-performing lines based on median arrival and departure delays. Each line is assigned to a rank for the selected day.

But the competition doesn't end there! By clicking on a row corresponding to a line in the table, the selected line will be highlighted on the map in order to visualize the champions.

Exploring Line Performance: delay at each stop

Now, we will dive deeper into the performance of each line along its trajectory by analyzing the median arrival and departure delays at each stop. Throuh the 3D histograms plotted directly on the map we gain insights into the punctuality of each line.

Please select a day of the week and choose a line from the dropdown menu. The map will display the selected line with its associated stops, represented as a 3D histogram. The height of each histogram bar corresponds to addition of the median arrival and departure delays at a stop.

The heart of any transportation system lies in its stops - the places where journeys begin and end. They are the nodes that bind the network together, serving as vital connection points for travelers.

Exploring the Stops

In this section, we invite you to delve into the stops of Lausanne's transportation network and discover their significance.

We present a new 3D histogram that illustrates the activity levels at each stop. We can see the intensity of passenger activity, helping in the identification of the busiest hubs within the city.

Enabling the heatmap will allow you to visualize the distribution and density of stops, highlighting the key locations and their connectivity.

Discover where people gather and disperse, and how these stops contribute to the overall functioning and vitality of the city.

EPFL Students' Perception on Lausanne's Transportation

We did a survey among EPFL students. We managed to collect 150 responses.

Survey Findings

Our findings suggest that the majority of students are satisfied with Lausanne's transportation system. Here are some key insights from the survey:

About the Project

We are three students from the COM-480 Data Visualization course at EPFL. Our goal was to provide meaningful insights into various aspects of Lausanne's transportation system to enhance the understanding and the awareness among residents and visitors.

Project Goals

The main objectives of our project were the following :

  • Analyze and visualize the transportation network of Lausanne => creation of an interactive and informative visualization that allows the users to explore the city's public transport system, including the lines, stops, and their characteristics.
  • Highlight the importance and impact of public transportation.
  • Provide insights based on data analysis: the analysis of transportation data uncovers patterns, trends, and performance metrics of different lines and stops, helping the users in making informed decisions about their travel routes and understanding the reliability and punctuality of the system.
  • Gather feedback and perceptions from EPFL students.
  • Foster collaboration and contribution: through our project, we tried to engage the community, encourage contributions and feedback. We believe that collaboration is essential for continuous improvement and innovation in transportation systems.
